Advent Devotion – December 20

December 20, 2021

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  John 1:14 (NIV)

“You don’t know what it’s like!”

We’ve all heard that before.  We’ve all said that before.  Usually it is our excuse as to why we do the things we do.  We think, somehow in our minds, that it justifies our behavior and the choices we make.

God hears it too.  People are always trying to point the finger to God when they fail.  Many even blame Him for their behavior.

So God decided to show us that it could be done.  He determined that He would set the example for us to follow.  He resolved to become flesh so that He would know what it was like.

He lived among us.  He was tempted, just like us.  He endured puberty and all the hardships of growing up.  He worked, like us.  He grew tired, like us.  He was persecuted like us.  And He died, just like us.

No longer can we say that God doesn’t know what it’s like.  No longer can we claim that it can’t be done.  No longer can we accuse God of expecting too much.

Then we hear those words, “You don’t know what it’s like!”  Only this time we aren’t saying them,  God is.  Now the shoe’s on the other foot.  You see, that’s why Christ came.  Not just so He could identify with us, but that we might be able to identify with Him.  He came that we might experience the Glory of God.  He came that we might know the truth.  He came that we might receive the Grace of the Father.  He came so we might, “Know what it’s like!”
