Advent Devotion – December 7

December 7, 2021

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”  Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)

The Prophecy of Isaiah is a promise of Peace.  Jesus is the one who brings peace to those who are under bondage to sin.  The Peace that Jesus brings is a peace of  inner tranquility and poise which come to the Christian whose trust is in God through Christ.

Jesus himself is the agent of Peace.  The Prophet Isaiah says this concerning Christ’s death, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 (NIV)

As we think about the Peace of this Christmas Season, it is important to realize that Christ came to bring Peace, a peace which could only be obtained through the sacrificial gift of his life.

As the Angels rejoiced at his birth, they pointed to His peace as the source of their joy saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14 (NIV)  And we receive this peace through faith.  Romans 5:1 tells us, “ Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (NIV)

Jesus brings us peace!  But when Jesus brings us peace it is not as the world gives.  When Christ gives, He gives of himself.  Jesus told his disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27 (NIV)  Jesus has given us His peace and this peace comes through His presence.  Paul writes,  “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (NIV)

Finally, we celebrate for the Promise of Peace in Christ Jesus is a promise that is not just for today but for eternity.  Scripture promises, “Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end.” Isaiah 9:7 (NIV) Let us celebrate the Peace that we have in Christ today and every day.
