“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good.”
Genesis 1:2 – 4 (HCSB)
In the beginning the world was a watery abyss without form, empty and draped in darkness. And then with four words all that changed. “Let there be light!” Creation was started; darkness vanished as the light shone forth. The watery abyss would soon give way to solid ground. The empty earth would soon be filled with life as God spoke creation into being.
Thousands of years of sin had brought the world into spiritual darkness. Religion had become empty and void of life. Man was sinking deeper into sins’ quagmire. And then with one word…JESUS… all that changed. John calls Jesus, “The true light, who gives light to everyone.” John 1:9 (HCSB)
The “Light of the world” was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger, and the darkness that covered the world vanished. The abyss of empty religion gave way as the “Solid Rock” became flesh and dwelt among us laying a firm foundation on which all men can stand. Those empty and dead in their sin now had hope as the “Bread of Life” came to fill us and give us life.
Christmas is the beginning of a “New Creation” in all who place their faith in Jesus Christ. And “God saw that the light was good.”
Prayer: Father, we thank-you for shining the light of your Son on our darkness. Lord, help us to embrace the fullness of your Son that we might become a “New Creation and that the old will pass away and all things be made new. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
