Matthew 22:41–46 (CSB)
41 While the Pharisees were together, Jesus questioned them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They replied, “David’s.”43 He asked them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’: 44 The Lord declared to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right handuntil I put your enemies under your feet’?,, 45 “If David calls him ‘Lord,’ how, then, can he be his son?” 46 No one was able to answer him at all, and from that day no one dared to question him anymore.
This is Jesus Mic Drop moment. Before microphones existed, Jesus silences his accusers with a question they cannot or will not answer.
The Pharisees understood that the Messiah, by prophecy, had to be a son of David, Jeremiah 23:5 (CSB) 5 “Look, the days are coming”—this is the Lord’s declaration— “when I will raise up a Righteous Branch for David.
Jesus quotes Psalm 110 and asks the obvious question, “Why does David call him ‘Lord’” Adonai in the Hebrew Kyrios in the Greek both refer to the supernatural master over all. Jesus is pointing out that the Messiah is none other than God made flesh.
During the final week of Jesus’ life, He embraced His Messianic title because Jesus knew His time had come. Jesus’ challenge to the Pharisees was to embrace this truth about who He was. The silence of the Pharisees was their rejection of Him.
All must make a choice. Will you join with David declaring Jesus as Lord or walk away in silence with the Pharisees? Dear God, help us to boldly proclaim with David Jesus is Lord. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
